Novices ordained in Mechelen

A Buddhist novice is any boy or man who enters the monastery but cannot yet be ordained as a monk. That goes for instance because he did not attain the age of 20 years.

Every year in Wat Dhammapateep in Mechelen a number of novices is ordinated. This happens in June-July at the occasion of the Asalha Puja and Khao Phansa festival.

It is a beautiful sight, the young boys, bald-headed and in monk robes, in all serenity and seriousness taking part in the ceremonies.

First, for a short period, the novices come to work and to experience the living in the Temple and to follow an instruction in the Dhamma. They learn, among other things, the Buddhist chanting and meditation.

Anyway a meaningful manner to spend a part of the school holidays?
